the sight of Pulau Tekong reminds me of what i swore on the first day of my enlistment day 30 March 2004 ....
" I , S85........ TAN GUAN RUI, having entered the service of the Republic of Singapore under the Enlistment Act, do solemly swear and truly declare and affirm that i will -
(a) bear true faith and allegiance to the Republic of Singapore;
(b) protect and defend the Republic of Singapore bravely and intelligently, with virtue and honour, not sparing my life blood in so doing;
(c) to my last breath be devoted to the people, the country and the Government of the Republic of Singapore;
(d) be loyal to the country and the Goverment of the Republic of Singapore;
(e) be ready, at the order of the Government, to rise up to the defence of the Republic of Singapore;
(f) be honourable, brave, disciplined and vigilant;
(g) obey the laws of the Republic of Singapore and comply with the orders of my commanders; and
(h) strictly safeguard and preserve State secrets and official information and never disclose them. "
Come to think of it, i really appreciate National Service as i really learn how to care for my friends, take care of the well being of my men, and also to obey my superior. NS makes you go through lots of hardship under the sun,soil,sand,mud,rain,blood,camo,grass,gunpowder and sweat, which in turn forge bonds between us. How to relate to people, making the extra effort to communicate with people we initially don't know, respect each other's weakness and consider their strengths as well.
2 Years 4 months, left with 93 days before my Operationally-Ready-Date (ORD) 29 May 2006. I can savely say that i have given out my 100% , upholding professionalism and integrity. Being one of the Best Serviceman in FDS-Paya Lebar Air Base, i hope to bring glory to my direct superiors and a role model for my trainees at this moment. I envision all my trainees not only to become a good soldier, but also a good buddy and son to the family.
Signing Off.
